Our commitment
As part of our vision for a healthier world, we want to make evidence based revision and assessment available to as many people as possible. A key part of achieving this is ensuring our products are accessible to everyone, through both innovative technical solutions and clear, practical content.
This accessibility statement applies to the BMJ OnExamination mobile apps:
BMJ OnExamination for iOS (Apple App Store)
BMJ OnExamination for Android (Google Play)
A separate statement covers the BMJ OnExamination websites (see the BMJ OnExamination website accessibility statement).
For a comprehensive overview of our company-wide commitment, our accessibility roadmap, and our testing methodologies, please refer to BMJ Group’s accessibility statement.
How accessible are the BMJ OnExamination apps?
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 Level AA standard, together with the relevant Apple and Google platform accessibility guidelines, wherever they apply to a native app. The apps have not yet been independently tested against these standards, and we are being open about that.
The apps are designed to work with the accessibility features built into your device, so that you should be able to:
use a screen reader (VoiceOver on iOS, TalkBack on Android)
increase the text size using your device’s text and display settings (for example Dynamic Type on iOS, and font size on Android)
use system-level zoom or magnification
adjust colour, contrast and reduce-motion settings at the device level
Because the apps have not yet been audited, we cannot yet confirm how completely each of these works in every part of the apps. Some screens present content drawn from our websites, which may carry the same limitations described in the BMJ OnExamination website accessibility statement.
Our commitment and progress
The BMJ OnExamination apps have not yet had an independent accessibility audit. We are commissioning testing against WCAG 2.2 Level AA and the relevant native-platform guidelines, and will update this statement with the findings and our remediation plan.
This work is integrated into BMJ Group’s broader accessibility roadmap (please refer to BMJ Group’s accessibility statement), which includes systematic audits, remediation, building accessibility best practice into all new development, and continuous improvement overseen by an internal Accessibility Working Group.
Specific accessibility challenges
Areas that may present challenges include:
screens that embed content from our websites, which may not fully support screen readers, keyboard or switch access, or focus highlighting
third-party components and SDKs used within the apps, whose accessibility we do not directly control
older content and legacy features that predate current accessibility standards
We are working with our providers to improve these areas, advocating for WCAG 2.2 Level AA conformance and, where necessary, evaluating alternatives that demonstrate a stronger commitment to accessibility.
Our company-wide commitment
At BMJ Group, we are committed to digital accessibility, striving for a healthier, more inclusive world by ensuring our resources are available to everyone. For a comprehensive overview of our company-wide commitment, our accessibility roadmap, and our testing methodologies, please refer to BMJ Group’s accessibility statement.
