BMJ OnExamination accessibility statement (websites)

Accessibility statement for the BMJ OnExamination websites (onexamination.com and my.onexamination.com).

Our commitment

As part of our vision for a healthier world, we want to make evidence based revision and assessment available to as many people as possible. A key part of achieving this is ensuring our content is accessible to everyone, through both innovative technical solutions and clear, practical, customisable content.

This accessibility statement applies to:

A separate statement covers the BMJ OnExamination mobile apps for iOS and Android.

How accessible is BMJ OnExamination?

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 Level AA standard so that all users have a positive experience. BMJ OnExamination is not yet fully conformant with this standard, and we are being open about where we currently fall short so that you know what to expect.

We are working towards ensuring that you can:

  • distinguish all text from its background due to sufficient contrast

  • zoom in up to 400% without content spilling off the screen

  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard

  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software

  • use most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We are aware that parts of BMJ OnExamination do not yet meet all of these aims. Based on our most recent review, known areas for improvement include:

  • some text, buttons and links do not have sufficient colour contrast against their background

  • some buttons and links — for example image carousel controls and icon-only links — do not have text that a screen reader can announce

  • some pages are missing a single main landmark, a top-level heading, or a “skip to content” link, which makes navigation with a screen reader or keyboard harder

  • some images do not have alternative text

  • some dropdown menus and form controls are not labelled in a way that assistive technology can read

  • some buttons and links are smaller than the recommended minimum target size

We have implemented an accessibility training plan so our staff can design and develop content, pages and experiences that better meet the needs of all our users.

Our commitment and progress for BMJ OnExamination

BMJ OnExamination has not yet undergone an independent accessibility audit. In September 2026 we carried out an internal accessibility review covering the marketing site, the sign-in and purchase journey, and the revision platform, which identified the areas listed above. We are commissioning an independent audit against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.2 AA standard and will update this statement with its findings.

BMJ OnExamination is being migrated onto the BMJ Learning platform. As part of this migration we are aligning OnExamination with the accessibility standards, remediation work and roadmap already in place for BMJ Learning. This work is integrated into BMJ Group’s broader accessibility roadmap (please refer to BMJ Group’s accessibility statement), which includes systematic audits, remediation, incorporating accessibility best practices into all new development, and continuous improvement overseen by an internal Accessibility Working Group.

Specific accessibility challenges

Third-party integrations

BMJ OnExamination incorporates content or functionality from third-party providers such as:

  • OneTrust cookie banner

  • social sharing widgets (WhatsApp, X/Twitter and Facebook)

  • payment and checkout components on the purchase site

We acknowledge that we do not have direct control over their accessibility standards. We are working with our third-party providers to explore avenues for enhancing the accessibility of these integrated services. This includes discussions on potential improvements, advocating for WCAG 2.2 Level AA conformance, and, where necessary, evaluating alternative suppliers who demonstrate a stronger commitment to accessibility standards.

Older content and platform migration

In some cases, particularly with older content or legacy features within BMJ OnExamination that predate current accessibility standards, achieving full conformance with WCAG 2.2 Level AA may present significant challenges. Because the platform is being migrated onto BMJ Learning, we are prioritising accessibility improvements that carry through to the new platform, focusing on user impact and technical viability.
